What Insulation to use for a Garage Door?

When choosing the type of garage door insulation, it's advisable to consider what is easier to install and the climate in your region. There are several types of insulation for a garage, such as Batt insulation, Reflective insulation, and Foam board insulation. Usually, garage door manufacturers have three types of door constructions namely single layer, double layer, and triple layer. The single-layered garage door has no insulation. Likewise, every garage door insulation has its thermal resistance (R-Value).

In Batt insulation, flexible fiberglass is backed by a foil or paper which acts as a barrier against vapor and air. Each inch of thickness provides R-3 to R-4 of insulating value.

Reflective insulation is comprised of rigid boards and reflective aluminum foil on either or both sides of the insulating materials. Cardboard and polyethylene bubbles are mostly used in reflective insulation due to its ability to reflect radiant heat. It's ideal for garages that heat up in summer and hot climates. Depending on the installation, reflective insulation provides an R-value of 3.5-6.

Foam board insulation has rigid panels made from polystyrene, which has a higher insulation value with lower thickness. Foam board is often faced with vinyl or aluminum. Each half an inch provides about R-3.3 and R-6.5 for an inch in R-value.
